Washington DC: Day 4

MLS on a Hot Day

After a season of watching the Earthquakes fall to last place in the Western Conference of MLS, we thought we would come and see the last place team in the Eastern Conference. And guess what, a 0-0 draw with a missed penalty shot as an added bonus! I guess that’s kind of harsh. It was an exciting game with lots of chances but as my friend John would say, “Bob, what this game needs is a goal”.

For a last place team, the game was really well attended and the crowd was enthusiastic. But of coarse we need to make some comparisons with watching a game in San Jose. Viewing the game at Audio Field was great, other than the damn heat and humidity today. I can’t imagine a day game in the summer here. But I really prefer the stadium at PayPal Park. The open concourse to concessions is way better. The number of stairs to get to our seats, and the slow exiting because of the stairwells wasn’t so great. We really have a good design in San Jose. One really nice thing about the stadium in DC; it’s in the same neighborhood as the Nationals ballpark. So there are lots of bars and restaurants nearby.

Dim Sum & Circle Neighborhoods

We got to meet up with our college friend Todd (SJSU International Center) today for Dim Sum. Apparently the Da Hong Pao is the place that Chinese diplomats can be found eating Dim Sum. It was good and very similar to what we get in the Bay Area. After a nice meal Todd showed us around the Logan Circle and DuPont Circle neighborhoods. Lots of cool housing to be found along with many embassies. Sorry, not many photos today.

Museum Scoreboard:

  • National Archives - Definite must see, though we really just had time for the big 3 documents: Declaration of Independence, Constitution, Bill of Rights.

  • Museum of American History - A casual museum with American cultural type exhibits. Not a staunchly, serious place but some interesting and amusing stuff. I had to explain the classic Julia Child SNL sketch (it was SNL right?) to Nick and Danielle as were walking the Food exhibition which included Julia Child’s actual kitchen. They had my Mom’s olive green crock pot there! Sorry no photo

  • Smithsonian National Museum of the America Indian - A good museum. Interesting building, mostly topics that I knew about to some degree but presented well. Until January 2023 there is an outstanding exhibit of Preston Singletary’s glass sculpture work. Really worth checking out.
