SMUGMUG
SmugMug is where I really store the thousands of photos I've been taking over the years. While building this site, I'm also making a plan to clean up my public SmugMug galleries, so you may see some links to there for more extensive offerings, while LeizureLand will be used to showcase some favorites.
Well it's really not a Daily Photo, maybe it should be renamed!
AN IMAGE WORTH 1000 WORDS
A photo is truth. At least it can be 'the truth', for a tiny fraction of a second. The smile, or the frown. The motion of water. A moment in history. It's what I love about a photo. A snapshot locks in the memory of a loved one, a creation of nature, or the nature of humanity.
A photograph can also be a purely artistic creation. One that uses a camera and film, instead of a brush or chisel, to imitate the physical world or to create an abstract visual work.
Maybe the best photographs of all are a little of both. After all, the photographer may be capturing a real person or event. But how the lighting is used, from what angle the shot taken, the cropping and post production decisions that are made, are all at the artistic discretion of the photographer.
But in the end, regardless of the quality or artistic merit of the photograph, it still is worth a 1000 words. And sometimes, there aren't even the proper words to even convey what that image says.
1000s OF WORDS WORTH
PROJECT: For the writers out there. Maybe I should start the 1000 Word Gallery. You write exactly 1000 words about any photo you find on LeizureLand (that isn't credited to someone else) and I'll pair the writing with the photo somewhere on the website. Ready, set, write! If we get enough good ones, maybe we can publish a book!

CANON or iPHONE
As Mr. Jobs once said: "The best camera is the one you have with you". It is certainly true now that you can take a 100 Mb RAW photo with your phone. Over the years, I've started taking almost the same number of Canon as iPhone photos while traveling. Sometimes it's just the handy device, or 'real' cameras are prohibited, or the nature of the lens is more suitable for the shot. They each have a place and can do different things well. Did you know that 5 billion photos are take every day? 92% of which are taken on a phone. No shortage of family photos to archive for future generations, that's for sure!
