Rambling and Whisky!

What a great day of simply rambling around and drinking whisky in Speyside! Since we didn’t book tours, it was simply just a walk about and drinking whisky day. We parked in Craigellachie and took a nice walk to the Macallan visitor center to have some overpriced flights to start our tasting journey. Don’t get me wrong, I actually like Macallan, but they are now one of the big distilleries and their visitor center reflects that. It’s fancy and tours are booked up well in advance. Beats me why anyone visiting there would order a mixed cocktail. Yvette and I have done whisky tours before so no biggie on missing this one. After Macallan, we took a really great walk along the river Spey to Abelour. There are guys fly fishing on the river and because Scotland has a Right to Roam law, you are allowed to pretty much walk where you want to. It’s more about the etiquette when walking across someone's field than anything else. The Abelour distillery closed early so instead, we had nice flights at the Mash Tun, a local whisky bar where the pours were generous. The whisky scorecard is below but I thought the most interesting was Ledaig Sinclair, a perfect Smokey compliment to some Smokey BBQ!
PHOTOS: Still working on gathering the photos to populate the gallery link above. If I don’t catch up soon it’s going to be a problem!

The grounds at Macallan were beautiful. They clearly like to showcase the property.

Speyside: Whisky, Whisky, Whisky
We added lots of tastes today. Nothing expensive really, just lot of variety.
Whisky Scoreboard:
Glenfarclas 15 - thumbs up, kind of spicy
Macallan 12 Triple Cask - so so
Macallan 12 Double Cask - so so
Macallan 12 Sherry Cask - not bad, I would buy it.
Macallan Edition No. 2 - decent, alcohol forward, then kind of spicy
Macallan Edition No. 4 - decent - grasslike quality, don’t ask me what that means.
Macallan Edition No. 6 - ok, I’ve been drinking all day, it seemed ok now in hindsight
Speyside Braden Orach - not bad, alcohol forward
Singleton 12 - definitely drinkable
Knockando 12 - not bad
Glenrothes Whisky Makers Cut - after so many whiskies I’m not sure what to make of it. So different than the others, it is hard to be objective. Different for sure and I think decent. Might have to try again!
Ledaig Sinclair - I like this one and it seemed to be perfect to go with a Smokey BBQ. It was Smokey for sure, but I like those kinds of whiskies.
Cool Ila DE - Smokey but not a lot of body. There are better options for something similar. Still drinkable though.
