EUROPE & DC '23 • Day 29: Oxford, UK

Updated: Oct 12, 2023

READY FOR MY OWN BED!

This poor bike! We walked by it so many times in 3 days

END OF THE LINE

29 days, 9 different beds, 8 countries (including the US), a lot of miles, and today was it. Priority? Hang out with Sarah before she headed back to London in the evening.

She’s taking a couple days to finish cleaning out her room for the person subletting for the next year. She'll return with her London flatmates on the weekend with some plants and last bit of luggage. School starts in earnest on Monday. So today it’ll just be some photos around Oxford. I’ll try and do a couple supplemental blog posts afterward. That will give me some time to actually look through all the Canon photos, as the majority of these in the blog are from the iPhone. Also, maybe some thoughts about such a long trip, with it’s ups and downs (mostly ups really), and any forgotten things to write about.

So here we go:

BRIDGE OF SIGHS

A common landmark that is always seen in photos of Oxford.

BODLIEAN LIBRARY

The famous library of Oxford. We used Sarah’s student status to see a small bit but hoping that when we return she’ll have figured out how we can get into the actual study library areas.

RADCLIFFE CAMERA Another famous landmark of Oxford. We didn’t go inside as there was something going on today.

Radcliffe Camera viewed from the University Church at St. Mary the Virgin

UNIVERSITY CHURCH at ST. MARY'S THE VIRGIN

Hey, more stairs! Piece of cake compared to St. Stephen's in Vienna but a really narrow spiral staircase. Great view of Oxford and the Radcliffe Camera..

ASHMOLEAN MUSEUM

We visited the Ashmolean Museum the way a museum should be visited. First of all, it’s free, so there is no incentive to ‘get your money’s worth’. If I was more diligent, I would do more short museum visits. I should do more. I will do more! Anyway, there was a nice painting gallery upstairs. Not large, but some pieces I liked:

Renoir - The Gardens in Montmartre

And then a small but nice gallery of Ancient Greece and Egypt. Offhand I don't know if this museum is also under pressure to return these pieces to their origin countries. The British Museum has really been under the gun about this, as more and more museums either return artifacts outright, or return ownership to the host countries and then negotiate to continue storing and displaying the items. After learning more about this in recent years, I now always wonder how a museum I am in, is handling this topic.

THAT’S IT. Train leaves for Heathrow at 7am and we’ll be in the air a little after noon. Thanks for following along.
